From a pushcart to the fifth generation

Hyman Moscot reached New York in 1899 through Ellis Island and at first sold ready-made glasses from a wooden pushcart. He opened the first shop in 1915, at 94 Rivington Street.

In 1935 the shop moved to 118 Orchard Street and stayed there for nearly eight decades. The house is still in the family: Zack Moscot, the fifth generation, joined in 2013 as chief design officer.

The names are Yiddish

Hyman Moscot spoke only Yiddish, and the model names come from there. “Shtarker” is Yiddish for “the strong one”, and the “Miltzen” is named after Uncle Heshy, whom everyone called Uncle Miltzen.
