About the brand
A Japanese eyewear house founded by the designer Masahiro Maruyama. The house calls its approach unfinished art: form is born out of questioning perfection, so the frames are deliberately asymmetric. The first collection, Dessin, was presented in October 2011, and since 2012 every new collection has been launched at the SILMO fair in Paris in September. All frames are made in Fukui prefecture, at an old-established factory in Sabae City, where eyewear has been made for over a century. The Monocle collection won the SILMO d'Or Grand Prix in 2020, and Kintsugi in 2022.

From Sabae, Fukui
All Masahiro Maruyama frames are made in Fukui prefecture, at an old-established factory in Sabae City. The house works with skilled craftsmen who bring each asymmetric shape and detail to life in a way computerised manufacturing cannot.
A titanium frame goes through making a mold, pressing, brazing, polishing and surface finishing before the parts are assembled. Frames in Mazzucchelli acetate are filed by hand, so that the transition of thickness and the fit stay even despite the asymmetry, and are then polished to a lustrous finish.
Step: parts stacked like building blocks
The Step collection is an experiment in which each part of the frame is stacked one on another. End pieces and bridges are placed freely, like building blocks, and form the structure of the glasses. Parts in different colours and textures create an intricate palette and a trompe l'oeil.
