About the brand
A Hollywood house founded in 1988 by Richard Stark, Leonard Kamhout and John Bowman. It began in a Los Angeles garage, making leather jackets that could not be bought at the time. The frames are handmade in Japan from sterling silver, gold, ebony, buffalo horn and leather, with hand engraving.

Out of a Los Angeles garage
Stark and Bowman began in a garage in 1988, to make leather jackets they could not buy. Kamhout, a silversmith, brought the silver. The frame came later, as one more piece worn on the body.
Silver, gold and diamonds are still worked in Hollywood, where over a thousand people are employed. The frames go to Japan, because optics demand a different precision than a ring.
Why the frame is engraved by hand
Machine engraving is one depth everywhere. Hand engraving is not - the tool bites deeper where the engraver wants shadow, so the same motif on two frames does not catch light the same way. Two examples of one model never look like a pair.
